Interactive Resources, Inc. was retained to provide historic preservation and architectural design services for the kitchen expansion and rehabilitation of existing interior spaces to in order to make the church’s food service operations more efficient. The church was constructed in 1928 and is listed as an historic resource in the 1989 Historical and Architectural Resources Survey of Salinas, California. The church has been feeding homeless and low-income residents with more than 150-200 meals daily for the past twelve years, as well as providing 30 weekly Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings onsite.

The kitchen remodel includes the removal of an existing non historic sliding glass door accessing an exterior patio and replacing it with a glazed, wood framed sliding door. Some of the windows are also repaired, while keeping the integrity and environment. The project involves mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades, as well as exterior and interior ADA accessibility improvements. Kitchen improvements included new exhaust hood, fire suppression system, exhaust system, new shelving, counters, cabinets, kitchen grease trap, sink, flooring, floor drain, and walk-in freezer/cooler, dish storage and janitor’s closet, and restrooms.

The alterations met the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the treatment of Historic Properties Rehabilitations Standards required by the California Environmental Quality Act.
