The Jesse Unruh Building, designed by Weeks and Day and constructed in 1928, is located on Sacramento’s Capital Mall. It is a Classical Greek architectural-style structure with significant historic features and sculptural works adorning both the exterior and interior. Previously known as the California State Treasurer’s Building, in 1987, it was renamed by Governor George Deukmejian in honor of Jesse M. Unruh, an American politician who served as a member of the California State Assembly and as the California State Treasurer. In 1984, the Jesse Unruh Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributor to the surrounding Capitol Extension District.
The five-story building located at 915 Capitol Mall is an approximately 164,200 GSF building, including a penthouse and a basement, and occupies a full city block in downtown Sacramento, California.
Interactive Resources, Inc. was retained by Treanor to provide architectural and engineering services for the building envelope and components, including windows, doors, decks, roofs and walls. The historic envelope includes granite, terracotta, and brick cladding.
As the architect of record, Treanor managed the design team in safeguarding the building’s historic character while designing a state-of-the-art office building for the State Treasurer’s Office. In addition to overall design management, Treanor was responsible for historic preservation design, historic masonry repairs, historic window rehabilitation, accessibility upgrades, seismic upgrade coordination, State Fire Marshal coordination, and other authorities having jurisdiction reviews.
All work was performed in accordance with the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for Rehabilitation and will be subject to review by the State Historic Preservation Officer to maintain the building as a historic resource. The Project will target Zero Net Energy, LEED Silver (at a minimum).
